Which Roof is Right For You?

Three Reasons To Clean Your Gutters Out More Often

If you're like most homeowners, you don't spend a lot of time thinking about your gutters. They're up there on the edge of your roof, presumably doing their job, but they're not something you focus on daily. You may know that you should clean your gutters out every spring and fall, but if you've never learned why this is so important, chances are good that you don't do a great job of keeping up with this chore. Well, that's about to change. After learning the three big reasons it's important to keep your gutters clear, you'll be motivated to clean them more often.

Reason #1: Gutters protect your roof.

Your gutters exist in order to drain water away from your roof. When they get all clogged with debris, water ends up backing up on the edge of your roof. This can cause the shingles in the area to start peeling, and once that occurs, leaks are imminent. Replacing these shingles, or perhaps replacing your whole roof, can be pretty costly. Not to mention, you'll probably need to replace your attic insulation and make some attic repairs once a leak starts, too! Spending an afternoon cleaning your gutters will save you a bundle on roof repairs.

Reason #2: Gutters protect your foundation.

When your gutters clog, the water still has to go somewhere. It ends up spilling over the edges of the gutters and trickling down the side of your house, straight to the foundation. Over time, this can cause water damage to your foundation. You might end up with cracks and leaks in your basement, which like roof damage, can be expensive to fix.

Reason #3: Gutters themselves can deteriorate.

Most gutters are made from aluminum or steel. Though these metals are quite durable, they are not impervious to damage. If there are moist leaves sitting directly inside of them for a long period of time, this constant exposure to moisture can lead to mold growth, which can accelerate the rate that the gutters corrode and develop holes. Clean your gutters out more often, and they'll continue serving you well for years to come.

If climbing up on a ladder to clean your gutters seems intimidating, consider hiring a company like Hogan  Roofing to do this for you. The money you pay will be well worth it, since cleaning makes your gutters last longer, protects your roof from damage and leaks, and also protects your foundation.
